The United States has entered into a $3.5bn (£2.2bn) deal with Pfizer, the world’s largest drugmaker, for a US company to sell its heartburn medicine Nexium in Britain.
The deal, announced on Thursday, comes after the US Food and Drug Administration said it is moving the active ingredient, AstraZeneca’s Protonix, from AstraZeneca’s generic drug Nexium to a rival company.
Protonix has been on the market for some time, but the US company is looking to sell its own generic version, or esomeprazole magnesium. This would be the first time Protonix has been sold in the US.
“Protonix is a very attractive drug for Pfizer,” said Steve Almond, a Pfizer analyst with research firm Lehman Brothers. “It could be the drug of choice for those who don’t like to give up the brand, as long as we have a stable profit margin.”
He said the company was seeking to make a profit on the sales of Nexium, which has annual sales of about $5.4 billion.
Pfizer, which is one of the largest drugmakers in the world, has an aggressive strategy to protect patients’ rights to the drug, Almond said.
Pfizer is the world’s largest drugmaker, with a market share of around 46% in the US, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. The company has more than 2 million employees globally, and has an annual sales of around $3.4bn in the US.
Pfizer also sells a number of branded drugs, such as Prevacid, Cialis and Protonix, including its cholesterol-lowering drugs Lipitor and Zocor, cholesterol-reducing drug Lipitor, for as little as $0.39 per pill.
Pfizer’s rival company, Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd., had a share-making business of $3.3bn in 2010, and has a strong portfolio of branded products. The company had a market capitalization of $3.2bn in 2010.
“The impact of this decision is tremendous,” said Almond. “The way it is going forward is it’s going to be a much more affordable drug.”
The US company has been struggling for some time with a range of patent expiries, including a US patent on a drug called Nexium, a patent on a generic version of Nexium, and an EU patent on a drug called Prilosec. In May 2011, the US government announced it was about to give up on the drug in order to pay for the patent expiry, with the drug already available.In 2011, the US Food and Drug Administration ordered the manufacturer Pfizer to stop selling drugs in the US.
In May 2013, the company announced it was moving the US patent for the drug from the European Union to the United Kingdom.
